Watershed Protection Plan

Systemic development of green infrastructure protects whole watersheds. The master plan for La Parguera uses natural, sustainable, and innovative methods for protecting and improving the health and function of the watershed.

These methods include urban engineering; permeable street surfaces that slow and filter runoff; creating rainwater catchments; restoring mangrove areas that provide coastal buffering and additional water filtration; and creating areas of native vegetation growth.

Each source of pollution reduced and each additional site of filtration built reduces the pollutant load in the watershed. This increases the health of local waterways, and improves the health and resilience of entire ecosystems downstream. These methods are sustainable over time and the green infrastructure is entirely self-sustaining.
