Technical Implementation

Effective green infrastructure systems are designed to target and treat sources of pollution at the landscape level. In La Parguera, strategies for creating sustainable stormwater flow include developing green street bioretention, a street-side mimic of natural areas, as well as restoring and creating mangrove areas. Mangroves naturally slow water flow and remove excess nutrients from runoff.

Urban Stormwater Flow

The flow of stormwater through city streets picks up runoff from multiple sources and deposits these pollutants directly in nearshore waters.

Sustainable Stormwater Flow

With additional filtration and wetland treatment, contaminated runoff can be naturally cleaned before arriving in nearshore waters.

Green Infrastructure Methods for Achieving Sustainable Stormwater Flow in La Parguera

Green Street Bioretention

Shallow surfaces planted with native vegetation can capture and naturally absorb excess nutrients in street runoff. Bioretention techniques mimic natural ecosystems through species diversity, density and distribution of vegetation.

Restored & Created Mangroves

Mangroves physically interrupt and slow storm water flow. They naturally absorb and use excess nutrients derived from runoff water, providing a natural method for removing pollutants.
